SmartPlugs inject and combust hydrogen at a controlled rate to reduce or eliminate urban air contaminants such as diesel exhaust, soot, carbon particulates, microscopic debris (prions, bacteria, viruses) pollens, and other smoke particles including oxides of nitrogen.

Such air cleaning by stratified hydrogen combustion can be achieved in a furnace, boiler, or internal combustion engine such as a gas turbine or piston engine. Shed tests show exhaust air that is cleaner than intake air.

McAlister’s SmartPlug™ fuel injector can be scaled from very small engines, like lawnmowers, to large automotive and trucking engines, and very large engines in electricity generation, marine, and rail locomotive applications.

The SmartPlug™ retrofit includes a heat conversion system that enables liquid Metrol™ to become high-pressure hydrogen for clean and highly efficient combustion.

McAlister holds the vision that more than a billion existing engines can be practically retrofitted to run on hydrogen and thus clean the air (removing carbon particulates and smog) as they do work, and in so doing powerfully reverse the damage that has been done to the environment during the first two hundred years of the carbon-burning industrial revolution.

Retrofit of existing combustion engines to clean hydrogen necessarily applies to both transportation (mobile) and electrical generation (stationary) engines. This is because electricity generators include both internal combustion gas turbines and external combustion steam engines that presently produce about an equivalent quantity of CO2 emissions as transportation applications with internal combustion piston and gas turbine engines.

Many transportation engines can have a longer life-cycle by being re-purposed for CHP distributed energy generation (micro-grid nodes) to supply clean hydrogen power and heat for homes/neighborhoods, and business/commercial buildings without significant CO2 emissions.
